A hundred memories flood through you when Girl Ray start to play. The happier the surface of their warm Nico-tinged pop songs appear to be, the more profound you feel when the sadness kicks in underneath it all.
The North London trio comprising 19 year-olds Poppy Hankin (guitar/vocals), Iris McConnell (drums) and Sophie Moss (bass) have been writing demos since their mid-teens about wanting to skateboard, how much they hate Mick Jagger and the school dinner ladies. Their cult demo ‘Ghostly’ got the attention of indie stalwarts Moshi Moshi Records and brought them on tour with Slow Club, Whitney, Haley Bonar and Ezra Furman to get their first taste of long spirited road trips, traffic jams and nerves in front of large crowds. Their debut 'Earl Grey' is a record of invention and ambition, whose delicate, sun-dappled melodies dance around the inside of your skull like a flickering zoetrope of memories: some fond, others less so.
