Imagine fuzz-driven guitars, a grinding Vox organ, a stompin' backbeat and some high energy screaming vocals, mix that with some real dedicated sixties attitude and you dig what the The Royal Hangmen were all about. These wildmen play vintage instruments with a sound reminiscent of The Sonics, 13th Floor Elevators and Small Faces but with a style and energy all of their own.
It all began in 2004 singer/guitarist Vasco Saxer and bassist Roger Rutishauser founded the group and started digging through the lost gems of the beat era. After a while, they even managed somehow to play a tune with three chords properly from start to finish. The band then decided it was now exactly the right time to play in dirty and smelly cellars, caves bars and basements for almost no money but for the sheer pleasure of raving the crowd with well-known tunes like “Psycho”, “Pushin’ Too Hard”, “Gloria” et al. Things went forward from then on: A first demo EP was recorded, their first self-written tune “Who’s That Man” found it’s way on a compilation from Lost in Tyme Magazine, their first concerts abroad in France were a blast.
Next step for the Hangmen was to release their first single. “Mary Jane” backed with “You Better Tell That Girl” ,in 2009 on small Greek label Lost In Tyme Records. The record received lots of very good reviews from various Blogspots and Fanzines all over the world.
More concerts in France and Switzerland followed, The Royal Hangmen have played with groups like The Sonics, Wild Evel & The Trashbones, The Montesas, Boonaras, The Mean Things, 60 Second Swingers, Giant Robots and The Bahareebas, just to name a few.
To extend their sound a bit, they recruited new member Daniel Jorg on harp and percussion in 2010 and immediately started to work on their first full-length album which is now finally recorded and ready for release.
